Mae Hong
Son Folk Arts & Handicrafts Centre (Established 1984 by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen) (ศูนย์ศิลปาชีพแม่ฮ่องสอน ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์) Since its foundation in 1984 the centre has provided materials and a place where experiences teachers can train hill-tribe villagers in weaving, rattan wickerwork and silverware making. This has helped to preserve traditional household arts and crafts and to give hill-tribe people a chance to increase their incomes by providing a place to display and sell their products. The centre is thus helping to conserve trees and forests, thereby preserving natural beauty and a green environment. |
The
centre has promoted sewing and hand-weaving using natural dyed yarns. |

Village basketry skills have been applied to making wickerwork baskets of both traditional and innovative design. Similar techniques are used in the production of rattan furniture, which has been rated as some of the best in the country. |
