Wat Phra Kaew and its complex is located on Trairat road in
Wiang Sub-District, Muang District of Chiang Rai province. This
temple was appointed the First Temple of Chiang Rai on
31 May 1978. (B.E. 2521).

Originally Wat Phra Kaew was called Wat Pa Yeah, the Temple
in the Golden Bamboo Forest, because it was surrounded by
beautiful and useful bamboo. Its name was changed to Wat
Phra Kaew in 1434 (B.E. 1977) after its chedi was structed by
lightning revealing the Phra Kaew Morakot within.

The Emeral Buddha is presently located in the shrine of the
Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
