 When one wants to buy a camcorder there are many items
to be checked such as : 1) Video image quality (sharpness),
2) Still picture image quality, 3) Recording media, recording
time and cost of media, 4) The speed and accuracy of focusing,
5) How can we edit and save several video scenes on 12 cm
DVD discs for long-term uses, and 6) The price of the camcorder.

The Sony DVD803E (should be the same as DVD403?) has the
following brief specifications :
1) Video images / movies 2,048,000 pixels
2) Still picture image 3,310,000 pixels
4) Recording media : 8cm DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW
5) The recording/playback time : HQ Approx. 20 min,
SP Approx. 30 min, LP Approx. 60 min.
6) Lens : Optical 10X, Digital 20X, 120X, F=1.8 - 2.5
7) Focal Length : Movies (16:9 mode) 42.8 - 495 mm,
Still images 37 - 370mm.
8) Video compression : MPEG2/JPEG (Still images)
9) Audio compression : Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator

Long Time Recording
For a long trip it is necessary that several DVD discs are purchased
or a notebook computer be carried along to save the video / still
images into the hard disk and then copy the video images to 12 cm
DVD disk.

Copy / Dub into 12 cm DVD Disc
With the supply software we can add music, put picture effects, etc.
In my case since I already bought the Panasonic DVD Recorder
about 2 years ago, the video pictures / movies from the 8cm DVD-R
disc can be copied into the HDD of Panasonic DVD Recorder.
Then dubbing can be made form the HDD into the 12 cm DVD disc
for long time uses. However, now there are new Hybrid DVD Recorders
which make copying DVD movies from handycam to DVD disc easier.

Sample Still Pictures
Sample still pictures shot by Sony DCR-DVD803E are shown in
the next page. Remember that the resolution is only 3 megapixels
and it is considered as a by-product of the main function of this
digicam. However, the picture quality is quite good and for one
DVD-RW disc you can take 850 or more pictures.

From testings I have the
following comments :
1) Picture quality is very good.
The colors are true and vivid
and seems to be saturated.
The picture quality should be
a little more crisp.
2) The sound quality is very
good.
3) Since the camera is very
light, pressing record start/
stop button will have to be
done lightly to prevent camera
bumps or jerks.

 4) To convert the video files
for showing on the internet
you need a separate software.
